Building Strong Community, One Business at a Time

The Problem Nobody Talks About

You know the feeling. A plumber is coming to fix the radiator that stopped get heating when the other are all piping hot. After several other “service” techs take a look. You pay the visit/consult fee. The nozzle is changed three times. Still no heat or, wait.. now 4 coils out of the 12 get warm. Is this frustrating or what? It used to work but now the problem can’t be solved. Well the local licensed plumber is coming tomorrow and I have high hopes he will find a resolution. We will find out. So what is the problem? No local roots, connections, familiarity or history that would bond the community with the plumber for him/her be the go to guy. It is a problem. No roots. So when heard that many small businesses face the dreaded 5 to 10 year window for survival, I was very concerned as to why that is. Again, so many variations on the reason but one solution has offered a window for enduring survival in the local community. Get organized and document your process for future growth.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Small businesses aren’t just businesses. They’re the heartbeat of our communities. When a local business thrives, it is evidence of stability. It has roots that are beginning to grip the community’s soil. The social structure of Main Street. The enduring sense of familiarity nurtures security. The parents know the owner and begin to know the workers. Likely one of the young high school kids. They know the people who become regular customers and the regulars all refer others and begin to know the owner as “the guy to…” That referral is strength and wealth of a community. It spreads a degree of goodwill, trust and belonging that encourages enduring relationships and generational care. Multiply that across a few city blocks of small businesses that “belong” to the community. The other significant aspect is the stability brings a degree of wealth. Real financial impact wealth.

The kind of tangible wealth that encourage the funds to rotate throughout the community. As the businesses become interconnected, supportive of each other and their patrons. The patrons all begin to rely on the local cleaners. The shoemaker, the plumber, the electrician, the grocer who keeps the last box of saltines for Mrs. Smith and the dog food cans on the lowest shelves because the kids run in to pick up a can for Rover. The presence of each proprietor matters more than many think. When the community knows the business owner is the guy that “lives two blocks away”, “behind Mrs. Jones’ house.” This is when a community is knitted and proprietors become well known.
